Historical Context

Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber designed the dime, quarter and half dollar introduced in 1892. His dime was struck until 1916, when the Mercury dime replaced it. In 1914 Denver struck 11,908,000 Barber dimes, against about 17.4 million at Philadelphia. That August the Panama Canal opened, and the next year Barber and George T. Morgan designed the Panama-Pacific half dollar for the San Francisco exposition that celebrated it.

Buying Power

In 1914 this dime had the buying power of about $3.37 today.

Condition

[Est. G-6] Circulated, original and never cleaned, with gray toning on the obverse and darker brown toning on the reverse. Full rims on both sides; UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the date and ONE DIME are bold and clear. LIBERTY on the headband is worn away, as is usual at this grade, and the wreath leaves are worn flat. Scattered scratches from circulation, heaviest on the reverse across the upper wreath and ONE, plus a few small dark spots (see the close-ups). Checked for the six documented 1914-D repunched mint marks: the D appears single. Grade estimated; not professionally graded. Currently still legal tender, but its silver content and collector value are far higher than face value.
