The 2002 Silver Eagle
The Mint struck 10,539,026 bullion Silver Eagles dated 2002. Bullion Silver Eagles carry no mint mark. The program was authorized by the Liberty Coin Act, signed by President Reagan on July 9, 1985, and the first Silver Eagle was struck in San Francisco on October 29, 1986.
The Design
The obverse is Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty, first used on the half dollar of 1916–1947. Weinman was born in Durmersheim, near Karlsruhe, Germany, came to America at 14, and studied under Dublin-born sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. When Walking Liberty first appeared in 1916, English-born George T. Morgan, designer of the Morgan dollar, was the Mint's assistant engraver; he became Chief Engraver the next year.
The reverse heraldic eagle is by John Mercanti, used from 1986 to 2021.
Grade And Authenticity
MS (Mint State) 69 means no wear, one point below the top of the 1–70 scale. NGC, founded in 1987, has been the American Numismatic Association's official grading service since 1995. The seller also tested the metal through the holder with a calibrated Sigma Metalytics verifier (consistent with silver), inspected the holder for tampering (none found), and confirmed the certification number on the NGC website.
