The Bicentennial Dollar

For the Bicentennial the Mint dual-dated the dollar "1776–1976." The reverse, the Liberty Bell over the Moon, was designed by Dennis R. Williams, a 22-year-old art student and the youngest person to that point to design a US coin; Frank Gasparro, who also designed the obverse, modified it. The 40% silver dollars were struck at San Francisco and sold as uncirculated and proof coins. All of the silver pieces have the Type I lettering.

The San Francisco Mint

The San Francisco Mint opened in 1854 for the Gold Rush. In the 1906 earthquake its building survived under Superintendent Frank A. Leach, holding a third of the nation's gold reserves.

The Eisenhower Dollar

On December 31, 1970, minutes before midnight, President Nixon signed the law that created the Eisenhower dollar, took the silver out of the half dollar, and authorized the GSA sale of the Treasury's Carson City silver dollars.

Grade And Authenticity

MS (Mint State) 66 means no wear; within MS 60 to 70, the number rises as marks decrease and luster and strike improve. PCGS was founded by seven dealers in California and opened for business on February 3, 1986, with a guarantee of grading accuracy. The seller also tested the metal through the holder with a calibrated Sigma Metalytics verifier (consistent with silver), inspected the holder for tampering (none found), and confirmed the certification number on the PCGS website.

Also In Our Store

  • 1970-S Kennedy proof half dollars, the last silver-clad year, ended by the same 1970 law.
  • An 1883-O Morgan dollar in its original GSA soft pack.
  • More Eisenhower dollars, including 1971, 1972 and 1974 dates.
