$5.59 2003 Est. XF-AU

Description

A Series 2003 $2 Federal Reserve Note with a green Treasury seal, issued through the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis: letter I, number 9, shown on the black seal at left and on the "9" in each corner. Signed by Rosario Marin, Treasurer of the United States, and John W. Snow, Secretary of the Treasury. Serial number I02802008A.

Serial ends in 2008: a year serial for anyone born, married or graduating in 2008.

Thomas Jefferson's portrait has appeared on every $2 note since Series 1869, and the front of the $2 is the oldest design on current US currency. The back shows John Trumbull's painting Declaration of Independence. Few $2 notes are printed, and banks usually hand them out only on request, so they are seldom seen in everyday spending and many people simply keep them.

Standard small size, about 6.125 x 2.625 in.

Historical Context

Series 2003 $2 notes were printed for the Federal Reserve District of Minneapolis, and Minneapolis notes were the only ones of this series released for circulation (121,600,000 printed in 2004). Printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth, Texas, shown by the small "FW" beside the face plate number.

2003 was also the year of the Northeast blackout (August 14, 2003), which left an estimated 55 million people in eight US states and Ontario, Canada, without power. And look at the serial number: it ends in 2008, a subtle salute to the future.

Buying Power

In 2003, the average factory worker earned about $15.74 an hour, so this $2 note was about 7.6 minutes of factory pay. By the consumer price index, $2 in 2003 bought about what $3.64 buys today.

Condition

[Est. XF-AU] Crisp, with bright paper; no folds seen on the scan, though a scan cannot rule out light handling. Not a star note and no errors found.

Legal Tender

Yes. United States currency issued since 1861 remains legal tender at face value ($2), whatever the series.

A Series 2017A $2 Federal Reserve Note with a green Treasury seal, issued through the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas: letter K, number 11, shown on the black seal at left and on the "11" in each corner. Signed by Jovita Carranza, Treasurer of the United States, and Steven T. Mnuchin, Secretary of the Treasury. Serial number K13308029A.
