1988 China Grain Ration Coupons, Lot of 2: Nanbu County, Sichuan, 2 kg Flour and 2 kg Rice [Est. UNC]
Description
Two local grain ration coupons issued in 1988 for Nanbu County, Sichuan Province, each for 2 kilograms (贰仟克). Flour coupon (南部县面粉券): a long arched bridge over a river, with a pagoda on the wooded hill beyond; orange border, blue-gray back. Rice coupon (南部县大米券): a leaping fish over a heap of produce, and buildings among pine trees; red border, maroon back. Both backs carry the red star seal of the Nanbu County Grain Bureau and four printed rules: the coupon buys grain or grain products anywhere in the county; the face value is in finished grain; the unit is the kilogram; and the coupon may not be bought or sold, is void if forged or altered, and is not replaced if lost. No serial numbers on this type.

Historical Context
China introduced nationwide grain rationing in 1955, and grain coupons were fully abolished by 1993. Counties also printed their own coupons, good only locally, like these two from Nanbu County.

Legal Tender
Not money and not legal tender: ration coupons, no longer usable since grain coupons ended in 1993. Sold as a collectible.
