Historical Context

Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953. That same morning, London learned that Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay of the British Everest expedition had reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, news held back and released to the public on Coronation Day.

Condition

Coin 1, polished display coin (left in the images): polished to a bright mirror finish on both sides for display. Design detail on the shields, crown and lettering remains crisp (see close-ups). Some contact marks remain on the raised horse and rider on the obverse, and a tiny dark speck on the obverse rim. Not a proof: proofs have frosted designs against mirror fields; this coin is bright all over.

Coin 2, original coin (right in the images): never cleaned or polished, original surfaces and luster.

Please judge both coins from the images and video, which show these exact coins.

The Last Pennies

Pennies dated 1967 were the last of the old pennies to go into circulation, and they went on being struck after 1967 still bearing that date. Britain changed to decimal currency on 15 February 1971, and the old penny ceased to be legal tender after 31 August 1971.

The Design

The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is by Mary Gillick. Britannia on the reverse is by Leonard Charles Wyon, based on an earlier design by his father, William Wyon.

Britain's Royal Mint has a link to American coins too: in 1876 it recommended the English engraver George T. Morgan to the US Mint, where he went on to design the Morgan silver dollar.

Grade And Authenticity

NGC, founded in 1987, has been the American Numismatic Association's official grading service since 1995 and has an office in London. The seller inspected the holder for tampering (none found) and confirmed the certification number on the NGC website.
