Historical Context

Antonio Jose de Sucre, the 'Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho', won the Battles of Pichincha (1822) and Ayacucho (1824) and was assassinated in 1830; the sucre currency was named after him. Runaway inflation in 1998-1999 and a March 1999 bank freeze led President Jamil Mahuad to announce dollarization on 9 January 2000, at 25,000 sucres per dollar. Ecuador has used the US dollar ever since.

Condition

[Est. UNC] No folds, creases or handling seen; bright paper with sharp corners. The small colored fibers are part of the paper. No marks, holes or tape. Grade estimated from the scans; not professionally graded.

Legal Tender

No longer legal tender: sucre notes lost legal tender status on 11 September 2000, and exchange at the Banco Central ended on 30 March 2001.
