Description
A Latvijas Banka 5 rubli temporary note (the Latvian ruble) dated 1992, Pick P-37. Both sides carry a large 5 in a geometric design; the front reads LATVIJAS BANKAS PAGAIDU NAUDAS ZĪME 1992, with printed facsimile signatures of Einars Repse and the chief cashier. Designer Kirils Smelkovs. Catalog size 120 x 60 mm. Serial KL 077168. Measured on the 1200 dpi scan: 117.8 x 60.3 mm. The close-ups show the serial, the front panel, the large 5 and the date. The last photo adds a millimeter scale.
Historical Context
Latvia brought in the Latvian ruble in 1992 to replace the Soviet ruble after independence, then switched to the lats in 1993 at 200 rubli to 1 lats.
Condition
[Est. Poor] Torn, with pieces missing along the top and right edges, edge splits, heavy soiling and creases: a heavily worn survivor that passed through a great many hands. Grade estimated; not professionally graded.
Legal Tender
No longer legal tender since 18 October 1993, when the lats replaced the Latvian ruble at 200 rubli to 1 lats (Bank of Latvia). Sold as a collectible.
